It is now about 15 days since a drop of alcohol passed my lips. Well, apart from mouthwash. Ostensibly this has been to ensure maximum recovery from the World's Worst Cold I had in the New Year, but it's actually turned into a bit of a badge of honour. Obviously a sane person would augment this puritanical achievement with some exercise, but I'm not totally mad.
This weekend was as action packed as usual. Laura arrived on Friday, in theory freeing up Jo and I to go to the pub but that didn't happen. Ellie has developed her own 'witching hour' between about half eight and half nine, where she likes a good shout; it's not random crying, it's a definite shout, like she's ordering us all around. Sometimes this develops into a proper good whinge but by that stage there's normally someone on hand to give her attention, probably reinforcing the behaviour. We're facing up to the realisation that our baby is a machiavellian schemer.
On Saturday the family were up bright and early at 11am. Nothing like those winter mornings for motivating you to stay in bed. I started on one of the indoor jobs from the mammoth DIY jobs list that Jo has kindly written down in big marker pen and stuck up on the wall in the kitchen. Needless to say it was a complete pain in the proverbials and took a good few hours. Then we went out for a walk which was most enjoyable, but very muddy. It was still raining.
Jo didn't feel up to going out, so we stayed in. Jo invited the Speakman-Whiteheads around (as we were due to be eating out with them) but neglected to tell the chef (yours truly), who was knocking together a romantic rogan josh for two. So the rogan josh turned into an improvised 'punjabi stew'.
With Simon driving and me abstaining, Jo and Tim got to work on single handedly supporting the wine business and we rounded off the evening watching all the 2006 videos. Funnily enough, they seemed to be dominated by, well, Jo and Simon on the pop. There's a common denominator there somewhere...
On Sunday I spent the day finishing my DIY (two are now ticked off the list) whilst Laura got on a tram, saw her train get cancelled, saw her replacement train go all of one stop before being cancelled, waited for another train, watched that train get cancelled, decided to come back, went the wrong way, went the right way, eventually making it back to Sale, ready to try another day.
And that was the weekend.
